Moisturizing Tips for Your Skin
Moisturizing is a crucial step in every daily routine for fighting against wrinkles and free radicals that cause skin to age. So it's obviously important to moisturize on a daily basis in order to look younger and healthier. However, there are a lot of moisturizers on the market, thus making it difficult to find one that will work for you and your lifestyle. Furthermore, it seems like a chore to apply lotions and creams to your body every day – even though it only takes a few minutes out of your day.
Moving along, oily, dry, combination, normal, and sensitive skin all need moisture to maintain the skin's healthy tone, and help keep fine lines and wrinkles from forming. The areas of your body that may be lacking sufficient hydration are the knees, elbows, lower legs, arms, sides and torso. After you've moisturized your face and neck, grab your daily moisturizing body lotion and pamper your skin to keep a youthful appearance longer.
You'll notice dry skin becoming more troublesome in the cold weather that accompanies winter because humidity is much lower. Although there are more issues with drying skin in the winter, you should moisturize your skin in every season to keep it looking good year-round. That said, here are some ways to find a quality face and body moisturizer that you can use to fight the signs of aging and dry skin.
Know the Ingredients
Antioxidants are proven to awake new skin cells for growth, so thankfully, many companies are using this knowledge by adding antioxidants into more products like face creams and body lotions. Antioxidants to look for while shopping for lotions are pomegranate, resveratol and green tea.
Check the ingredients before trusting the front of the bottle; if the antioxidant ingredients are found near the end of the list, the amount may not be enough to help or improve your skin. Aloe is another perfect example of an ingredient that is sparsely added to beauty products, and may not help your skin much because of the low quantity. Don't fall for any of the gimmicks that cosmetic and beauty companies come up with!
You should know that collagen fibers found in skin are responsible for keeping your skin toned, which prevents it from sagging and aging at an alarming rate. After learning what collagen does for your skin, it may seem like a good idea to add it to body moisturizers; unfortunately, this isn't the case. There has been no evidence that shows collagen-infused potions improve your skin's health or condition. So save your money by avoiding products that over-hype the fact that they add collagen because it doesn't do anything but take up space in the bottle. The same ideal is applied to yeast extracts that are said to smooth wrinkles.
Back to Basics
An obvious bit of advice for choosing a lotion is to pick one that you like in regards to texture, scent and price. Getting into specifics, find a body moisturizer that not only works in the first minute you apply it, but continues to ease discomfort and improve the skin's appearance once it's in your daily routine. Also look for a formula or texture that you don't mind; for instance, if you don't enjoy a thick formula, then you won't want to use it every day! Furthermore, try to find a pleasant scent you enjoy so that it isn't torture to smell when first applied to your body. Don't overspend on your lotion either because the price is no indication of the quality!
Preventative Care
The sun is just as damaging to your skin as heat is to wax. So applying a daily body moisturizer that contains SPF is beneficial for a healthy and youthful glow. Even on cloudy, rainy or winter days, it's important to use an SPF lotion on both your face and body so that you're protecting the collagen in your skin from breaking down. To protect yourself even further, look for lotions that contain an SPF of 15 or higher, zinc oxide, and octinoxate or oxybensone to shield against UVA and UVB rays. Take the time to practice preventative skincare so as to avoid sun damage and premature aging.
How to Moisturize Face Skin
Moisturizing by Skin Type
When you're looking for a face moisturizer, it's important to choose one that won't break your skin out with pimples. And you'll have better success when using moisturizer that is compatible with your skin type. When buying a moisturizer for oily skin types, it's best to use water-based formulas that are non-pore clogging since oily skin is prone to breakouts. Dry skin requires moisturizers that contain propylene glycol or urea to heal cracked or flakey skin, and to keep your skin hydrated.
Creamy products are ideal for dry skin types. Sensitive skin will of course require products specifically designed for sensitive skin prone to irritation, rashes or breakouts. Combination skin types will see great results by using a gel cream moisturizer because it isn't too heavy, and is able to penetrate your skin deeply to give you moisture where it's needed the most.
Aging Gracefully
Maintaining healthy skin is what makes you age gracefully; however, wrinkles are inevitable and can't be avoided. And skin requires different attention with the different eras of life. For instance, an 80-year-old woman won't need the same things as a 15-year-old girl because they are in different stages of skin aging. But regardless of age, one thing to always do is to use a moisturizer with an SPF as previously mentioned. You may also want to find an anti-aging toner to use daily.
Moisturizing Teenage Skin
Worrying about wrinkles should be last on your list of worries as a teenager! Breakouts are the main concern and should be maintained so to avoid acne scarring on your face and body. Since oily skin is usually the cause of acne breakouts, the misconception is that oily skin doesn't need anymore moisture, which isn't the case at all. With the fluctuation of hormones caused by puberty, the skin may become oily and hard to deal with. Fortunately, using a moisturizer can actually help with your breakouts so use an oil-free toner and moisturizer. The toner will help slow the oil buildup on your skin, so use it after you've cleansed with an oil-free face wash containing salicylic acid.
Use at least a pea-sized amount of a water-based moisturizer on your face and neck daily. Then splash cool water on your face afterward to close your pores and to prevent breakouts. When it comes to moisturizing your body, use any moisturizer as soon as you dry off following a shower. It's best to moisturize clean skin, and it's a bonus having your pores open in order to absorb the most moisture from the lotion. Don't forget to slather your feet, knees, and elbows with lotion as these areas seem to be the driest.
Moisturizing Skin in Your 20's
Caring for skin in your 20's can be a challenge for some; however, in most cases, you've discovered your skin type at least, and can begin from there. Some men and women choose to start using a firming night cream in combination with the daily moisturizer and toner they used as teenagers. This will keep your skin hydrated all night, and help to keep your skin taut as you get older.
Moisturizing in Your 30's
Once you've reached a certain age, you are inevitably going to develop some signs of aging, whether it be fine lines or wrinkles. So when you're taking care of skin in your early-to-late 30's, you'll want to incorporate an anti-aging serum into your daily routine. This will penetrate deeper into your skin, and help to slow the development of more lines and wrinkles. You may notice that your skin tends to become dryer on your body as well, and you might have to use a more penetrating or hydrating lotion after showering.
Moisturizing Skin in Your 40's
By the time you've reached the big 4-0, you're no doubt going to have an increased number of fine lines. But the amount all depends on how soon you began taking care of your skin while younger. The same rules apply such as moisturizing after showering, and using a toner, anti-aging serum, moisturizer, and night firming cream before bed. Also use a soothing and hydrating body moisturizer daily!
Additional Skin Care Tips
- Along with applying daily moisturizers, night creams and serums, your skin would benefit from a soothing and gentle moisturizing body wash in the shower. If you're using a heavily-perfumed soap in the shower with little skin-softening ingredients, you could be causing your skin to become dry. Another clue to look for is residue. If you're currently using a body wash that leaves behind a residue on your skin, this could cause your skin to feel dehydrated, thus making you uncomfortable or itchy. Using a drying soap will also cause your skin to lack the glow it should naturally have, in turn, leaving you looking dull.
- The amount of moisture your skin needs may depend on the weather, so keep in mind that, while you use a light moisturizer during the warm months, the same lotion may not effectively treat your dry skin in the winter. This being said, you can change from a light formula to a slightly thicker moisturizing lotion in the cold times of year.
- Be sure to have plenty of water throughout the day to help keep your skin healthy from the inside. If you're drinking a lot of caffeine or carbonated drinks, your skin suffers and can become dry as a result. Drinking water will help to keep your skin clean of pimples as it assists with moisturizing skin from the inside-out.
- After your shower isn't the only time you can apply a moisturizer and benefit from it. Apply lotion throughout the day, and you'll see brighter and more hydrated skin appearing the more you use it. For those who wash their hands more frequently throughout the day due to their job, it's important to use a hand cream or thick moisturizing lotion after you wash your hands to replenish moisture that could be drained from harsh soaps used. If your feet are the dry-up-and-shrivel kind, then find a foot cream to use at night. Apply a substantial amount to your heels after you clean them, put a pair of wool socks on, and go to bed. If you don't like sleeping in socks, do this treatment 20 or more minutes before you lye down. The wool socks will help lock in the moisture, and penetrate the deep cracks and tough skin that can form on your feet.
- Use an oil like coconut, olive, or vitamin E to apply to your dry skin, or use it as a weekly treatment to add moisture. Vitamin E is great for wrinkles, and can even be used as a hot oil treatment on your hair. Olive oil is highly moisturizing on hair and skin, but can also cause people to break out, so use it only as often as you need, and don't overdo it! Coconut oil smells great and has multiple uses. It improves the appearance of nails, hair and skin, and can be a great oil to cook with in the kitchen. Reach for a virgin or extra virgin oil to get the best results from a beauty standpoint.
- Face masks are a great way to give your skin a boost of hydration, and are easy to mix together or buy from the store. They can target dry skin as well as acne-prone skin so find a mask that suits your needs, and apply it according to the directions on the package.
To create your own moisturizing face mask, all you need is an egg!
- Before you get in the shower, separate the egg from the whites, and whisk the whites until you see small bubbles forming.
- Take both the egg whites and yolk into the shower with you, and cleanse your face with this daily face wash, then pat your skin completely dry on your neck and face.
- Now put the raw egg whites on your face, and let this become dry and tight on your face. It will take about 5 minutes to become fully tightened, and the longer you leave it on, the tighter it will become.
- Rinse your face and neck with warm water, and pat dry again.
- Now apply a layer of egg yolk to your face and wait another 5 minutes so that it has time to become tight as well.
This mask is great for oily skin, and can be used every day if desired. If you have dry skin, you'll want to only use this mask two or three times a week since it can cause your skin to become dryer due to tightening agents in the egg white.
Recap
When you're trying to get the most out of moisturizers and improve your skin's appearance, what you have to remember is the results won't be instant, and may even take up to 30 days for you to see a difference. If you've avoided moisturizers for years, it could take a while to improve the appearance of your skin so it's important not to give up after a few days!
