Casting Hair
If you use any products which are stimulators of growth, you will prompt hair follicles to produce hairs. This makes hair which is in the telogen phase to move on to the anagen phase. At this point you can observe the phenomenon of a sudden hair loss, or ecdysis, which means that a lot of hair is falling out at the same time instead of doing it gradually. This, in turn, gives an impression that one looses hair as a result of a disease.
The truth is that the "old" hair died out some time ago and it would have fallen out sooner or later. When we use stimulators we urge hair cells to grow new hair. Thus, the process of losing hair is a positive sign pointing to the fact that we react in a positive way to the treatment. Paradoxically, people who react the most positively to treatment are those who loose the most hair as a result of ecdysis during the first phase of treatment. This, in turn, makes them end treatment because they are afraid that the result is the opposite to the expected one.
The phase of losing hair should last for about 4 to 6 weeks and it can be observed after app. 6 weeks from the moment we start the treatment. If the extensive falling out of hair is still noticeable after 2 months, you should contact your doctor, because it may not be the case of ecdysis.
Casting hair may also be the case when all hair which has grown after the treatment, would go to the phase of telogen simultaneously which, in consequence, would cause hair falling out at the same time and give the effect of casting. You should also remember that during the regular daily cycle about 50 to 100 hairs usually fall out and this is a normal process.
To sum up, casting hair is, in most cases, the sign of a positive reaction to hair treatment. However, if it lasts too long and is accompanied by some distressing symptoms, for instance: reddening, itching or any other forms of skin irritation, you should consult your doctor immediately.
